One of the most common questions we receive from customers is: “What size battery and solar panel do I need for my gate?”

If you guess the size, you might end up with a dead battery during a cloudy week. To ensure reliability, you need to calculate your “Energy Budget” based on your motor’s specific power consumption.
In this guide, we will use a standard 800kg Sliding Gate Opener (260W Motor) as a case study to teach you the calculation logic. You can use this method to choose the perfect solar kit for your home.
The Case Study Specifications
To make the math real, we will calculate the requirements for a typical residential setup:
- Motor Power: 260 Watts (AC Motor)
- Daily Usage: 10 Cycles (Open + Close per day)
- Gate Weight: 800kg (Estimated run time: 60 seconds per cycle)
- System Voltage: 24V (Battery Bank)
Step 1: Calculate Daily Energy Consumption (The “Withdrawal”)
First, we need to determine exactly how much energy the motor pulls from the battery every day.
1. Calculate Total Daily Run Time:

Convert seconds to hours:

2. Calculate Basic Energy Needs: Multiply the Motor Power (Watts) by the Time (Hours).

3. Add System Buffer (Inverter Loss): Since this is an AC motor running on DC batteries, we use an Inverter. Inverters consume a small amount of power during conversion. We add a 20% safety buffer.

Result: Your system needs to generate and store 53 Wh of energy per day.
Step 2: Select the Battery Voltage & Capacity (The “Storage”)
This is the most critical part of the setup.
⚠️ Why we use a 24V Battery System
For a motor with 260W of power, we strongly recommend using a 24V Battery Bank (e.g., two 12V batteries connected in series) instead of a 12V system.
- Lower Current: A 260W motor draws high current. By doubling the voltage to 24V, we cut the current in half. This reduces heat in the wires and protects your electronic components.
- Higher Efficiency: 24V systems provide more stable power to the inverter, ensuring the motor runs smoothly under a heavy load (800kg).
Calculating the Amp-Hours (Ah)
Now, let’s find the right battery size for our 53 Wh daily load.
1. Convert Wh to Ah (at 24V):

2. The “Rainy Day” Backup (Autonomy): To ensure the gate works during winter or consecutive rainy days, we advise planning for 5 Days of Autonomy.

3. The 50% Rule (Battery Health): To double the lifespan of your lead-acid or AGM batteries, you should never drain them to 0%. We double the capacity to keep them healthy.

Recommendation: For this system, choose a 24V 20Ah to 24V 30Ah battery bank. (Installation Tip: Connect two 12V 20Ah batteries in series).
Step 3: Size the Solar Panel (The “Income”)
The solar panel must be strong enough to refill the 53 Wh consumed by the motor, even on a short winter day.
1. Effective Sun Hours: We calculate based on a conservative 3 Peak Sun Hours per day (typical for winter or cloudy regions).
2. Required Wattage:

3. Real-World Efficiency: Solar panels rarely output 100% of their rated power due to dust and angle. We add 30% to be safe.

Recommendation: While a 30W panel is technically sufficient, we recommend a 50W Solar Panel. A 50W panel costs very little more but ensures your battery charges fully even on overcast days, providing peace of mind.
Summary: Recommended Setup for Home Use
Based on the calculations above for an 800kg (260W) AC Motor used 10 times daily, here is the reliable configuration:
| Component | Specification | Reason |
| Battery Voltage | 24V DC | Required for efficient operation of 260W loads. |
| Battery Capacity | 20Ah – 30Ah | Provides 5+ days of backup power. |
| Solar Panel | 50 Watts | Refills daily usage in <2 hours of sun. |
| Inverter | 500W Pure Sine | Handles the startup surge of the motor. |

Final Installation Tip: “Sleep Mode”
Because this system uses an AC motor with an inverter, it is vital to ensure your control board has a “Power Saving” or “Sleep” mode. This feature turns the inverter OFF when the gate is not moving. Without this feature, the inverter’s standby power consumption will drain your battery overnight, regardless of how big your solar panel is!
